It is springtime, and for homeless people as well as those of us who live in houses, that means allergies. The stuffy head, the watery eyes, the sneezing up gobs of stuff… it affects us all. However, for those sleeping outside, the warmer weather means a bit more comfort at night, although the longer daylight hours mean delaying going to your “spot” until after 10 at night, to avoid detection.
I have been busy the last few weeks; going to court, feeding in food lines, helping a man who moved into a rooming house keep the room and more. On top of all this, I have had the sinus infection that would not end (that would be the aforementioned allergies). And then there was Easter…
This time of year reminds us of what Resurrection will look like: The old dying away, the new being reborn from the decay. In springtime, we see the shadow of the hope that was first demonstrated all those many years ago, when the God of the universe manifested himself in the person of Jesus to show us that another world was not only possible, it is already here.
The Way of Jesus is simple, yet not easy. As my friend and fellow urban missionary Bart Campolo says, it all boils down to: “Love God. Love People. Nothing else matters.” Love is hard. Grace is hard. But, if there is one lesson that Jesus taught us it is that Love wins. Love always wins.
