I (Hugh Hollowell) am an inner-city missionary who works with, loves and advocates for the poor and the homeless here in Raleigh, North Carolina. Love Wins is the name of my philosophy and theory of ministry (well, I stole it from Jesus and the apostle Paul), as well as the name of the organization some friends and I are trying to put together to make my work more formal and sustainable over the long haul.
Our theory of ministry is one of love, in keeping with our particularly hopeful interpretation of the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. We believe that pretty much any worthwhile change will come about as a result of the love of God, expressed through relationships and we take Matthew 25 seriously: We believe that, in some mystical way, when we feed the hungry, visit those in prison, shelter the homeless and in general, show love to those the world has left behind, we do it to, not just for, Jesus.
I act as ringleader for a bunch of beautiful people who have came on board and believe that another world is possible. We work together to make the ugly beautiful, to reclaim the lost, to make it on earth as it is in heaven. Together, we share our food with people, we listen to sad stories, we witness miricles and cry when we lose someone. We speak truth to power and disagree with most Americans that your net worth determines your worth. We rejoice when people donate beautiful things for our friends to use, and cry when rich people donate their used underwear and socks.
Because the people we work with are poor at best and often destitute and homeless, our ministry relies on the financial generosity of our supporters located both here in Raleigh and around the country. These people believe in us and our mission of plotting goodness and creatively loving people and their partnering with us makes it all possible.
